Cross Bay Swim
A century-old open water tradition gets a website ready for its 100th swim
The Challenge
The Maggie Fischer Memorial Cross Bay Swim has crossed the Great South Bay since 1927, born the year after Gertrude Ederle conquered the English Channel. Heading into its 100th swim, the all-volunteer organization needed a site that could honor that century of history while doing the practical work of race day: registration for swimmers and kayakers, event resources and instructions, records, donations and information for spectators.
What We Built
We designed and built a fast, hand-coded Astro site that leads with the story: a century timeline from the first 1927 crossing to today's 5.6-mile course from the Fire Island Lighthouse to Brightwaters, alongside Maggie's story and the event's full history. A live countdown builds anticipation for race day, and clear paths route swimmers to registration, kayakers to sign-up and supporters to donations.
The site also works as the event's operational hub: master instructions, the swimmers manual, course maps, a century of records and past winners, RaceJoy live tracking for race day, sponsor recognition and a first-ever centennial art raffle. Everything an athlete, volunteer or spectator needs lives in one place.
